Church shouldn’t reject same-sex couples

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints emphasizes that while it upholds the belief that marriage is intended for a man and a woman, it does not discriminate against same-sex couples. This stance was reiterated during a press conference held in Lagos to welcome two elders, Apostle David Bernard and Patrick Kearon.

Contrary to the Catholic Church's recent allowance for priests to bless same-sex unions, a move sparking debate and controversy, the Latter-Day Saints reaffirmed their commitment to showing love and respect to individuals with same-sex attraction. Elder Bernard stressed, "We believe that marriage is between a man and woman. Now, for those who have same-sex attraction, we love them as brothers and sisters."

The church, established in Nigeria in 1970, operates under the leadership of its 17th prophet and apostle, Russell Nelson. Elder Kearon emphasized the importance of dialogue across faiths, stating, "Dialogue between faiths fosters understanding and friendship. Lack of understanding erodes trust. Conversations and dialogues build understanding, which in turn builds trust—a crucial element in society."

Expressing readiness for engagement, Kearon added, "We preach the gospel and strive to emulate the kindness and love of the Savior towards our neighbors. In the coming years, you will see us redouble our efforts to extend kindness and love to our neighbors here in Nigeria."
