Senator Ireti Kingibe emphasized that the Senate is poised to address the security challenges in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by summoning Mr. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of FCT. During a Channels TV program, Senator Kingibe expressed concerns about the escalating insecurity in the nation's capital and called for a strategic plan to safeguard the residents.
Highlighting the pressing need for the Minister's intervention, Senator Kingibe remarked, "As the chief security officer of the FCT, he should have a plan." She emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Minister, the police commissioner, and intelligence agencies to comprehensively address the security issues on the ground.
The FCT has witnessed an increase in insecurity, including kidnapping for ransom and armed robbery. Senator Kingibe lamented that her earlier warnings about the growing insecurity were initially overlooked. She recounted instances, such as the unfortunate incident in Mpape and a 'One Chance' attack, which she had previously brought to the attention of the Minister without immediate action.
Acknowledging the efforts of security agencies in response to public outcry, Senator Kingibe stressed the need to go beyond apprehending kidnappers and address the root causes of insecurity. She advocated for optimized collaboration among security agencies and emphasized the importance of community policing to gather vital information from residents.
Senator Kingibe urged a shift from the prevalent focus on protecting VIPs and checkpoints dismantled by 10 pm, calling for security presence within communities. Additionally, she highlighted the significance of stricter financial controls to curb illicit activities contributing to insecurity.
Anticipating Senate action upon resumption, Senator Kingibe stated that the FCT committee would convene with ministers and security agencies to develop a concrete plan for protecting constituents. She emphasized the need for proactive measures beyond acknowledging the threat's reality, seeking a comprehensive way forward.
